World Bamboo Day – September 18

  • World Bamboo Day was officially established on September 18 at the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok in 2009 and declared by the Thai Royal Forest Department.
  • Founded by the World Bamboo Organization in a bid to raise global awareness of the use of bamboo and how using it can benefit our environment and educate on the sustainable utilisation of it.
  • Known as green gold, bamboo is ubiquitous as it dominates rural and urban landscapes.
  • In 2017, Parliament ‘declassified’ bamboo as ‘a tree’ on non-forest lands.
  • Similarly, a scheme called SFURTI (Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries) is being implemented by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in order to boost traditional industries and bamboo artisans.
